Understanding Text Messaging to Canadian Phone Numbers
Sending text messages to US phone numbers differs from sending text messages to Canadian phone numbers. Carriers in Canada have very specific messaging restrictions and, in general, handle text messaging a bit differently.
Most common causes of text delivery issues to Canadian numbers:
- The phone number you're texting was previously ported (from one carrier to another carrier, from a landline to a mobile number). Ported numbers (numbers that change carriers) sometimes have delivery issues if the network information is not updated or if it occurred recently. There are known issues with some numbers and the available network information for them in Canada.
Other things to keep in mind:
- Text-Em-All accounts that send text messages to Canada will be throttled to adhere to Canada's local carrier throughput restrictions. Text messages to Canadian phone numbers will be sent at a rate of 1 message per second (per text number).
- As a rule of thumb, we do not recommend exceeding 500 messages per day and per text number in Canada to minimize the risk of text messages being blocked.

Note: You can now send text messages to Freedom Mobile! The carrier previously restricted communication via toll-free text messaging but they've since lifted the restriction.
